If you google, “Who invented the microwave”, you’ll find various sites attributing its invention to American engineer, Percy Spencer. The microwave was first sold in 1946. Of course, there were several others before him that produced the technology and groundwork that helped him pull it all together creating the appliance that we enjoy today. Microwaves and crockpots make my life so much easier. We live in a society that tells us to be constantly busy in order to be considered productive and successful. So to get your daily to-do list done and feed your family a nice meal in the evening can be a challenge. The microwave’s magic and ease of use is the reason why most people utilize it on a daily basis. It helps us get in and out of the kitchen without much work or hassle.
We get the term “microwave society” because it is the notion that the things that we desire in life can be quickly processed from beginning to end without much work or hassle. Like putting popcorn in the microwave and enjoying it three minutes later. We want everything our dreams and desires to come to life and we want it NOW. We do not want to work hard, do the labor or go through any process, we just want fast, quick, easy and simple results. More specifically, we want everything our way, right away! But that is not the mentality God wanted us to develop.
Proverbs 12:11 states, “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” (New International Version). In the age of social media, we see overnight successes that go viral and begin to receive recognition as well as fame. For some this is an introduction into Hollywood, the music industry or even a political platform. It is the gateway into building your brand. That can make the average person desire microwave success. We do not see the work that these individuals do behind the scenes to make sure that they building relevance their names and networking to influence there own agendas. We only see that they were lucky enough to go viral. That tempts us into believing that we do not have to work hard to be successful. But the truth is God has called us to work hard and to steward this earth until the day of Christ’s return. We have to be careful to remain humble while achieving success. When we work to the point we may feel that we’ve done it on own own but it is God that has given us the power to get wealth (Deut. 8:17-18). Paul reminds us that we can do all things through Christ who is constantly strengthening us. Let us not despise our beginning phase because as we are faithful over the little things, God will exalt us over greater things, offering us the desires of our hearts.
Let us pray
Father, your promises are always Yes and Amen! Help us not to be weary in our well doing. Helps us to not faint and endure hardness as a good soldier. Your plans are to prosper us, even as our souls prosper.
Amen.
