I’m a fan of snacks! It’s completely unhealthy and a lot of times there is absolutely no nutritional value to my food consumption (if you can call it “food”). But I’m happy inside. And maybe I’ve just inadvertently admitted the fact that I am attempting to remedy some void with snacks. Okay... there is my sin, I may have an emotional eaters tendencies, allegedly. It’s hard to admit but sometimes when I’m bored or I feel general discontent, I become anxious and I seek to satisfy my woes with junky foods and leftover Holiday treats. We can all agree that dressing and gravy is even better the next day. It is that time of year, again!
Can I also admit, the obsession over the extra weight is not worth the temporary satisfaction that I receive when I’m on a snacking binge. The extra work I have to do in the gym to maintain my physical appearance becomes “painful toil” because I’m not truly committed to health and wellness but rather appearing to look well.
Romans 15:13 ESV says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Scripture reminds me in the time of emptiness, boredom and feeling life’s discomfort that seeking the presence of my Father, the God of hope, can fill me with joy and peace, not snacks! The power of the Holy Spirit gives me the ability to be full of hope when I may feel vacant. Psalm 16:11 tells us “in His presence is the fullness of joy and at His right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Let us not forsake the access we have through the Holy Spirit to be completely filled in times we have reached the levels of voided and empty.
Let us pray:
Father, your strength in made perfect in our weakness. Help us to seek you first! We are stubborn and we reach for futile pleasures while you are trying to pull us closer to your face. Forgive us.
