Good fried chicken is found in many places in the south. It’s a staple here but significantly so in my North Carolina hometown, Maxton. There is an art to brining and soaking it in buttermilk for 2-3 days (if you have the time). Seasoning the flour with all the right herbs and spices and using a nice coat of egg wash to allow the seasoned flour to hold on to every piece. You have to make sure that the oil is hot enough to fry the chicken through while creating a golden brown, crunchy crust effect on the outside. And of course pure love pulls it all off to create a lasting experience! It’s magical especially when there are homemade biscuits involved. Yum! What could make this better, you ask? How about some honey and hot sauce?! I’ve literally driven through to Bojangles and order a 3 wing dinner with honey and hot sauce, please. It’s important that I can have the extra kick of spice on my chicken and that sweet drizzle of honey on my biscuit. It has to happen!

It’s quite ironic that I desire both flavors with my food. However, in life I’d much rather endure all the sweetness of honey and none of the spicy recoil of the hot sauce. That is probably the case for a lot of people. Jesus says in John 16:33, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."” This scripture promises me that as I abide in Christ, I will have peace and contentment no matter what I find myself experiencing in this fallen world. It’s also reminds me that I can walk boldly in confidence and courage despite feeling the fiery sting of trials and tribulations because he has already conquered and has dominion over this world. Because I’m in Christ, I have a renewed perspective and authority over the challenges that I may face on this side of heaven.

Let us pray:

Father,

Thank you for your word. Remind us that we do not have to be afraid of the terror by night nor the arrow by day because we can find refuge under your wings.

Amen.
